Gamescom 2017: What's new in this EDITION

Games, hardware, and other elements have been mentioned by the main manufacturers, publishers and developers during the Gamescom 2017 and here is the main information that he had retained.
That's it, the Gamescom 2017 is about to close its doors in Cologne. We still have the day on Saturday, but it is more about closing the show than announcing new things. So it's time to make a small assessment of what remains the main European event dedicated to video games.

gamescom-201

Since its creation – in 2009 already – Gamescom has always had the reputation of being an "E3 of the Poor". Recognize that the biggest announcements are always reserved at the Los Angeles show, but over the years, the Cologne event has managed to draw its pin from the game. Publishers often keep them under the elbow for Gamescom and it's also an opportunity to come back on a less-in-sight of the industry, the independent scene.

Through this balance sheet, we obviously do not claim completeness and you may not have the same feeling as we do. Do not hesitate to share your impressions in comments.

Microsoft,  Xbox One X and  4K

All Lord, honour, Microsoft opened the dance of conferences of pre-exhibition on Sunday, August 20, we are dealing with first American editor. Alas, it cannot be said that we have been very impressed by the provision of the developer of the Xbox. Through a livestream of a little more than an hour, we certainly had a taste of the Xbox One X, the future console 4K of the constructor that will happen in the fall, but for the rest, it was a little grimace soup.

The Xbox one X is therefore already available for pre-order and a version called "Project Scorpio Edition" has been presented: it does not fundamentally change anything, but offers a slightly different decoration with a silkscreen recalling the code name of the beast. A beast that will benefit from more than 100 games "Xbox One X Enhanced": Microsoft has confirmed this figure by evoking the arrival of Wolfenstein 2 in the program to enjoy the same games as on Xbox One, but with a superior technical quality.

Without much surprise, Microsoft showcased the biggest upcoming Xbox productions by the end of the year with videos for Assassin's Creed origins, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, Forza Motorsport 7, and Sea of Thieves. Alas, nothing to contradict those who point out that the Xbox One X will be the first console not to have exclusive to its launch ... That might complicate Microsoft's business.

We were surprised to see Microsoft back on Halo Wars 2. The game was released earlier this year and although the content arrives, this isn't necessarily the best place to discuss such things. More interesting, Microsoft has confirmed rumors of partnership with Bluehole: PlayerUnknown's Battelgrounds in its Xbox One version will be so published by Microsoft, which, as a result, has launched a new trailer for Cuphead, sound always very friendly 'indie '.

Finally, Microsoft and Frontier Development took advantage of the conference to unveil Jurassic World changing: a game of management... with dinosaurs amusement park. Oh one last thing: the most amazing ads finally concerned more the PC the Xbox One, with Age of Empires final Edition and, especially, the announcement of an Age of Empires 4 developed by Relic Entertainment.

Nintendo in brevity

Is not new for anyone interested a minimum events video game, Nintendo always try to distinguish themselves and the Japanese firm is also not particularly fan of the format "press conference." Nintendo has never needed this kind of high mass to make announcements... He prefers to organize a small good livestream to unveil his projects with a touch of humour.

This year, at Gamescom, Nintendo made even more minimalist, we'll come back. The first novelty evoked by the manufacturer is about Super Mario Odyssey for which gameplay was introduced and a new unveiled realm, the Kingdom Luncheon. Then, Nintendo has so poured into minimalism by booking the scoop of its ads to Twitter! Yes, several tweets have been published about the arrival of a new 3DS XL in the colors of the SNES (Europe, October 13) or the release of three new Nintendo Select range for 3DS games: Super Mario 3D Luigi’s Mansion 2 et Kirby Triple Deluxe.

Nintendo has mentioned the arrival of Fire Emblem Warriors in Europe on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS: October 20. Note in passing that during the Cologne show, Japanese sales figures fell with a Nintendo Switch in very sharp recoil (22000 units elapsed). The fault seems to have still insufficient stocks.

We already knew that Rocket League would soon land on Nintendo Switch, we know now that this version will integrate exclusive vehicles. You know, the vehicles in question will be in the likeness of a few stars of the Nintendo World: for the moment have been mentioned Mario, Luigi, and Samus Aran from the Metroid franchise. Finally, be aware that Nintendo will organize in the evening a livestream around Metroid: Samus Returns precisely. The opportunity to learn more about this highly anticipated project... and perhaps to limit printing, Nintendo don't like more than this format "JV lounge".

What about SONY?

the Japanese arranged to partner with a few major development studios and Sony name was thus raised thanks to Bungie and Push Square. Unsurprisingly, the first has made the promotion of Destiny 2 that we have discovered in its PlayStation 4 release in addition to competing platforms: the release of the game is very close to us, is however not the most interesting announcement. If he was sure that Shenmue 3 would talk about him at this Gamescom, we expected a mini-teaser than this trailer that already dream about fans of the franchise.

No surprise, this time, Sony took advantage of the show to evoke the Gran Turismo case. The builder announced the release of a special version of the PlayStation 4. A version whose colors are very "GT Sport", but that – it's a matter of tastes of course – didn't hit us in the eye. Note that there is no question of a PlayStation 4 Pro grind with this skin without Sony explaining it to us.

EA, Bethesda, Ubisoft: third party publishers make the show At the time of review, we realized that the three "majors" of the video game has been a little disappointing. Fortunately, and even if it is not madness, the largest third-party publishers offset somewhat the relative disappointment.

After a very busy E3, BETHESDA had no new announcements to make. On the other hand, the Gamescom will have been the occasion to illustrate in more detail its future projects and in particular dishonoured: Death of the Outsider, a standalone suite of Dishonoured 2 whose exit is imminent. A little farther away from us, Wolfenstein 2 and the Evil Within 2 were also able to enjoy videos giving some additional details about the gameplay and content.

Somewhat surprisingly, Bethesda Softworks was one of the few editors to put VR in front at this point. Absent from almost all of the stands, the VR helmets were present in Bethesda who took advantage of the show to confirm the dates of release of two games that could convince players to invest: Fallout 4 VR will come out so on December 12 on the HTC Vive when Doom VFR will be available a bit earlier - December 1 - on HTC Vive obviously , but also on PlayStation VR.

Electronic Arts followed the same path as his compatriot. If he did not have a great novelty to unveil, the fans of the EA franchises had a lot of small things to put themselves under the tooth. This is how there was a Star Wars Battlefront 2 with a very impressive starfighter assault. FIFA 18 went from his trailer to try to cut the grass under the foot of Konami/PES. On the side of Need for Speed, EA had a fun announcement: The new BMW M5 will be present in the game and a video to illustrate the thing was obviously on the menu.

In a somewhat surprising way, the biggest announcements of Electronic Arts concerned the Sims franchise. Indeed, the last opus – the Sims 4 – will arrive on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the month of November when, on PC, a new extension – Cats & Dogs – will be released on the 10th of the same month. Electronic Arts could not miss such an opportunity to broadcast a video of our familiar companions. Finally, nail of the EA show, Battlefield 1 should soon receive a new game mode. Scheduled for an Alpha test running September, the incursion mode will offer clashes in 5 vs. 5 and seems directly designed for ESport.

In the manner of Bethesda, Ubisoft had made a hit during its E3 2017 conference in Los Angeles. Not surprisingly, the french publisher did not produce the same performance at Gamescom, but he had still to satisfy players with more complete presentations, more detailed videos different projects discussed in California. This was the case for Assassin's Creed Origins who took advantage of two new trailers: the first purely cinematic and the second focused on the historical context and the main protagonists of the scenario.

In fact, Ubisoft still had a real big news at present in Germany, countries where the franchise is particularly strong. The editor has indeed revealed Anno 1800, an album that allows developers to return to the historical foundations of the series after several science fiction opus / futuristic. Anno 1800 is still far from us since the output is not expected until the end of 2018, but we know that the studio Bluebyte wishes to involve the community and even launched a site to collect feedback and proposals. At present, the main features are the presence of a single player campaign, a sandbox mode, a multiplayer mode and randomly generated maps.

On the Showfloor – the main place of exhibition at Gamescom – Ubisoft had a wide range of games aimed at very different audiences. So, alongside Far Cry 5 and for Honor, we could play Mario + Rabbids or Kingdom Battle, but also at just Dance 2017, South Park, Assassin's Creed origins or The Crew 2. Finally, Ubisoft took advantage of the Gamescom audience to insist on the eSport side of his Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six with the finals of the Pro League Season 2 held at the end of the show.

What's new for computers ?

Number of games mentioned previously also will come out, or even priority on PC, but the Gamescom it is much more than this for PC players. The Germany remains a land of predilection for the platform and a constructor is also not mistake: NVIDIA. The promoter of the famous GeForce actually preferred the Gamescom to E3 to hold his press conference... A choice no doubt wise, console manufacturers being far less prominent than in California.

A conference that has not been the opportunity of sensational ads, but that shelled his batch of new friendly / surprises. Thus, the formalization of Final Fantasy XV had been at the origin of several rumors, but NVIDIA did a pretty advertising by presenting - the first - the Windows Edition of the game from Square Enix. The game will obviously benefit all technological innovations promoted by NVIDIA (Turf, Flow, HairWorks...) and provided that your machine follow, it will be in 4K 60 fps. The trailer is also aesthetically very successful.

Not necessarily obvious to all, the other announcements of NVIDIA first concern the public PC that the builder intends to caress in the direction of the hair. For example, the Shadowplay utility takes advantage of a new module – Highlights – To automatically select the best captured sequences from your game sessions to mount/broadcast without wasting time. Finally, the Ansel Image Capture tool is always about more games: Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War will be two of the new features of the comeback to take over.

Beyond the single NVIDIA, Gamescom is also often the opportunity to make many devices... land of PC game requires. This year, publishers have not missed the appointment and MSI or HP for example had several mobile gamers to present. However, we have noticed that other big names (Alienware, Astro, Logitech...) wait a few more days and the IFA in Berlin to draw their novelties. This is a surprising way, but appointment is made next week.

Technical innovations are always significant, especially when playing on PC, but most important, this is the games. From this point of view, Gamescom is interesting to highlight amounts of indie games as interesting originals. To be quite honest, we could do a whole dossier on these only games "indies". We therefore prefer to come back to a small handful of them (there is also our hub dedicated to Gamescom to find more articles on these famous games), who have typed us in the eye, in the first place to which, My Memory of Us.

Inspired by life in the Ghetto of Warsaw during the second world war, this game manages never to sink into the Prurience by adopting a particular achievement made of black and white with subtle touches of red. Playable in co-op two, he staged a little girl and her younger brother. When the girl who leads the duo, they're going faster. But when it's the boy, they win with discretion: a complementarity that should be used to the best. It should be noted that no Nazi is represented: the military are replaced by robots-soldiers.

We were also impressed by the work done on no. Truce with the Furries. The game recalls a certain Planescape Torment and emphasizes the richness of the dialogue, interactions with the other characters. Not only with the other. Very focused on the bottle, our hero - a discredited with its hierarchy - COP starts sometimes in debates with himself! No. Truce with the Furries is also a very nice technical success with remarkable lights.

Finally, we have retained a French production, Unruly Heroes. Designed by the Montpellier of Magic Design Studios, the game adapts the legend Chinese Monkey King into a classic platform game in the gameplay, but very well-crafted. Controls respond to the finger and to the eye, the boss fights are varied and you can play co-op up to 4, each of the participants having a hero of legend, with specific capabilities. Complementarity and fun game will be more than ever to the appointment.

Due to the competition of the Internet and social networks, it has been years since the video game fairs can be as extraordinary as in the years 90 for example. However, this Gamescom 2017 is a quite honorable cru with its confirmations and lots of good surprises. We said, our balance sheet cannot be exhaustive, and we have not, for example, mentioned many companies (Activision, Blizzard, SEGA, Konami ...), so don't hesitate to let us know which games has been the most marked in the comments.
