Facebook launches Watch - New original video platform

Facebook speeds up again on video and becomes a true video portal. The social network has just announced the launch of Watch, a new space dedicated only to the original content produced for Facebook. This space will actually be an accessible tab via a video icon on the app or desktop called Facebook Watch.

The content will be produced by partners with an interesting monetization: 55% for the producer, 45% for Facebook. The videos will be monetized by advertising breaks, on the good old television model. It will also be possible to offer ad-free content, or monetize them via glad brand. The launch of the service begins today in the USA on mobile, desktop and on the TV app. The deployment will be then expanded to all users for all countries.

The "Watch" tab will group live and recorded programs categorized into several categories: "More watched", "What makes you Laugh," "programs seen by your friends." The publishers present in Watch can also broadcast them in the Newsfeed of their fans. A playlist feature will also allow you to subscribe to a program to see the following episodes as soon as they come out. The model is at this level very close to what YouTube offers via its channels.

Facebook Associates with partners to offer content but also acknowledges having funded several programs. There will be several hundred programs at launch, with the will to multiply this number and to propose thousands of programs. The types of content are heterogeneous: documentary, Vlog, Sport, live content ...

At the level of the programs available, the list is already long: Taste made will offer a cooking show, the Baseball League will be broadcast, the Nas vloger will have a daily show, Billboard will have a show on the history of music, David Lopez will have a show on his life of Social Media Star, National Geographic will also be present as well as the NBA. There is therefore for all tastes and all the hearings on this new video platform.

This launch is a significant movement on the part of Facebook which proposed so far of the content seen "involuntarily" via the Newsfeed. With this new tab, Facebook is getting closer to a YouTube or Snapchat and we'll voluntarily subscribe to content (like you would with a YouTube channel) to view on a regular basis. If the publishers and creators play the game (and if the format is well monetized) we might see a lot of content in this new area. The challenge for Facebook is of course to become a major player in the video... and be able to offer advertising on these videos.
