It's funny to see how the trend has been reversed in a few years. If the program of quality, deep, daring and who is interested in real human questions, it is more likely to turn to television to film, too overwhelmed by the avalanche of superheroes.
When we heard for the first time of The Sinner, the first thing we had was about The Secret of Pascal Laugier. Obviously because there's Jessica Biel in there and because she seems to still have serious problems. But also because the general atmosphere left a big heavy and sad, depressed and dramatic shadow, which was not displeasing to us. Now that we've seen the first episodeof this tv show, we can say loud and clear: it has nothing to do. And so much the better.
The Sinner is his universe with intelligence from the first scenes (previous have intriguing opening): Cora is employed in the family business of her husband, they have a child, they live not far from his in-laws, his mother-in-law takes care of the baby during the day and the evening they dine together. The typical image of a perfect life, an existence worthy of a sticker advertising, except that there is a small concern: Cora chokes, is more slave of his daily life than anything else and a bad way. During a trip to the edge of a Lake, it is the meltdown: Cora grabs a knife and kills a stranger brutally. In charge of the investigation, detective Harry Ambrose feels that there is something more serious in this story and will conduct its investigation to find out.
Under the pavements, RAGE
American television has always had this great ability to survey his company and its own culture with intransigence to to unearth the hidden, the shame, the macabre and reveal it to the big day and The Sinner is no exception since from its pilot we understand that we're not here for fun.
Taking the classic postulate of tapies darkness sour normative varnish of the societal , this episode allows us to attend a portrait of a woman who asks us about the role of the mother, and why a woman in modern Western society. In the face of the security of the couple and the family cocoon, what remains of the ambitions of the person? Can we still exist for oneself when we have made the choice to lock ourselves in a reassuring and bright setting? Is this not the best time for our demons to wake up? We see, the Sinner is not exactly an episode of my Family First.
Of course, all of this is that one part of the universe put in place and the shadow areas are still many. The character of Cora seems from a background very puritanical and rigid, essentially based on Judeo-Christian guilt in what she more crass and his family today seems to have been the loophole needed to survive. It is easy to understand as the plot to reveal more tortuous than the simple murder free and emotional and this driver already shelled some darn tempting tracks for the rest of his story.
Mesmerizing and wild
Technically, The Sinner is very solid in its atmosphere, its staging, its dreamlike sequences, we stay as close to Cora, we enter into his head and empathy sought after works of Thunder. But this would be possible without a range of actors at the top of their form.
Jessica Biel (also a producer) is striking, don't be sparing nothing to embody Cora. We rarely saw him also bruised, neurotic, depressed and lost in The Sinner, and she proves once again that she's a great actress when the project is worthwhile. Bill Pullman, in the role of detective Ambrose is not outdone him either because he offers us an interpretation in such shadows that he no longer had it made for a very long. It's simple, without going overboard, there sometimes seems to find the comedian of the era of Lost Highway.
What else to say about this first episode if not that it is very promising for the sequel to the series? Taking, tense, intriguing and moving, he takes us from the first second to his end credits and announces a great series. Yet he will have to contend with some pitfalls. Indeed, after such a flaming start, the drop in diet is possible in the sequel to the series but it is said that, as it will only have 8 episodes, this relatively short format should prevent it from falling down well. In any case, that's all we hope for. We advise you without further waiting to watch The Sinner, a series that announces striking and disturbing as well as mesmerizing. And that doesn't happen every day. We cross our fingers so that the suite goes well.
