After the conclusion of season 3, The Flash let us expectantly. What would happen to Central City without his hero?
Nothing special apparently, up to the day where a Samurai comes to town, threatening to all destroy if the Flash don't fight it within 24 hours.
The Flash: Reborn Season 4
As is the tradition in the Arrowverse, the writers always promise us that they have learned from past mistakes and that what is coming will be clearly what is expected of the show. As part of The Flash, it would be appropriate that this is true, because the storyline on Savitar went quite wrong and it would be unfortunate to do worse.
It is not this season premiere that will give us a clue about a qualitative ascent of the show. The Flash returns in fact focusing on the return of his hero.
Six months have passed since Barry entered the force. Iris took command of the team, leading his brother, his father and Cisco who seem to be content to catch the small fry menu. The proof, as soon as a new enemy poses a challenge, is panic.
Of course, the idea is to push everyone to move to bring Barry back. In fact, Cisco admits that he uses the samurai as an excuse to try the experience he is working on, so he has to get his friend out of prison.
With its great concepts, The Flash tends to be inconsistent. Overnight, which was impossible and incomprehensible. Everything is a matter of timing and, to try to make us believe that defusing the dramatic cliffhanger of season 3 was not just a matter of minutes, we insist on telling us that it happened six months.
This does not change. We don't really shows us what was life without Barry, nor even what is different in the lives of the characters. Explained us in one sentence that Julian is back in England, that H.R. was buried, that Cécile moved in with Joe.
For the rest, it's IRIS to try to inject a bit of dramatic tension - which is not helped by the fact that the men in her life seem all to have fun.
Screenwriters appear so wanting to make a fresh start - and show that this season 4 of The Flash will be less dark - while seeking to manage well too bulky baggage of the season 3.
The result is draft and inconsistent. In this registry, the justification for Caitlin's return is shipped in a few lines of dialogue that erases much, even the fact that no one has spoken to her for six months.
Only one thing matters: we have to bring Barry back. The rest must show us that a page has been turned — and very briefly introduce the enemy of the season. The Flash, like his hero, is reborn. It is in any case what we are trying to sell here.
Once we get to the end of this episode of recovery, it's hard to feel like the Flash has actually taken a fresh start, since it's all about closing the previous chapter. Now that this is done, we can hope that the sequel will be less messy, because the series could really benefit from starting off on fresh start.
