Computer security researchers like to give first names to the malware they flush. After Judy who made quite a few waves a few weeks ago, it is Xavier's turn to make himself known ... and not in good.According
to Trend Micro, who discovered this malware, Xavier is an SDK used by
some developers to display advertising and manage statistical
information. Nothing reprehensible therefore, this especially as this kind of SDK does not modify the operation of the apps. But Xavier is different.
An adware that mutes
From "simple" adware a bit painful (it was installing APK on infected devices), Xavier has become frankly evil in its latest variant: it tries to escape the antivirus, it downloads code remotely to allow the hackers to Take control of the smartphone, and steal personal information such as the user's email address, installed apps, and so on.
Trend Micro provides a list of nearly 80 apps infected with this adware. There is a bit of everything from the photo editor to the ringtones and wallpaper software. Check if you have not installed one of these software and, if necessary, delete it. Xavier mainly affects Asia, but reports of cases of infection in the United States and Europe are reported.
